The Unseen Journey of Emirati Designer Noora Shawqi
Discover the compelling narrative behind the brand, from initial missteps to a mission-driven enterprise rooted in travel and sustainability

Let's be honest. We usually only see the highlight reel: the stunning final photos, the glittering launch events. What we don't see are the late-night doubts, the designs that didn't work, and the sheer guts it takes to start from scratch.
Emirati jewelry designer Noora Shawqi knows that side of the story all too well. Over seven years, she's built a brand inspired by travel, but the journey itself has been the real education. She was kind enough to pull back the curtain for us, and her story is far more relatable than you might think.
Sunflowers and Solitaires: The Seeds of a Passion
Long before she ever thought of making jewelry, Noora was forming a quiet bond with it. Ask her about her earliest memory, and she won't mention a family heirloom. Instead, she laughs about a pair of sunflower earrings she wore while dressed as Pocahontas. "They were among the very first pieces I owned, and I absolutely loved them." There was also a simple gold piece she wore every single day, a constant companion she now sees in old photos. It’s funny how those small, personal attachments can quietly point you toward your future.

The "Beautiful Mistake" That Started It All
Every creator has that one first attempt where theory collides with reality. For Noora, it was a convertible emerald and diamond earring. She still has it, not as a trophy, but as a reminder.
She learned two hard lessons with that piece. First, a sketch can lie. The factory executed her diamond setting design perfectly, but in her hand, it just didn’t look right. Second, she made a classic beginner's mistake: she fell in love with the design and forgot the cost. "For a piece that was small to medium in size, I used a lot of gold, which pushed the price far too high." It was a beautiful failure; one she hopes to revisit one day with wiser eyes.
The Unexpected Push into the Spotlight
Here’s something that might surprise you: Noora never intended to be an entrepreneur. She was happy in her comfort zone, working an office job and studying jewelry design purely for the joy of it. The push came from her husband, who saw her passion and talent before she fully did.
"It was the first time I had studied something so hard but never once complained about the workload," she recalls. But launching a business? "That was never part of my plan." Juggling a new baby with a demanding course was a monumental task, made possible only with her mother's support. That initial nudge, however, changed everything. Today, her husband is her co-founder, handling the business side so she can focus on what she loves most: the design.

Where Ideas Are Born (Hint: It's Not a Boardroom)
If you imagine a designer in a sunlit studio, you'll need to adjust the picture. Noora's best ideas often arrive in the quiet moments just before sleep. Her tool of choice? The pen tool on Snapchat. "I quickly sketch it... so I don't forget," she says, and the next morning, she refines the idea on her iPad. For full collections, she retreats into silence, but the initial spark is often captured in the dark on her phone, a perfectly modern way to begin an ancient craft.

The Collection That Never Was
How do you know when a design is right? For Noora, it's a feeling; Almost like a non-negotiable confidence. She once went as far as producing an entire collection, only to look at the finished pieces and feel... nothing. No excitement. No spark.
"I felt nothing – no excitement, no spark," she admits. "If I am not confident in a piece, I can’t promote it, sell it, or even speak about it properly, it shows straight away in my face and in my voice." So, she made the tough call and scrapped the whole thing. That commitment to her gut feeling is what gives her brand its authentic soul.

More Than a Brand: It's a Legacy
What truly sets Noora's work apart is its depth of purpose. Her "travel through jewelry" philosophy is brought to life by a powerful commitment to giving back. This isn't just marketing; it's the core of her operation.
For her Maldives collection, she set up a program where customers can directly adopt coral frames to help rebuild fragile reef ecosystems. For the Morocco collection, she partnered with the Al Noor Centre, collaborating with women in need to create beautiful thread bracelets adorned with her gemstone charms. Every piece tells a story that goes far beyond aesthetics.
And for Noora, one of the most important parts of that story is its origin. Every piece is proudly produced in the UAE. "It is the least I can do to represent my country through my work," she says, her pride palpable. "Just mentioning that a piece is 'Made in Dubai'... carries a lot of meaning."
It’s a reminder that the most beautiful creations aren’t just about what you see, but about the journey, the mistakes, and the meaning woven into every detail.
