Apple Unveils iPhone 16, iOS 18, Watch Series 10, AirPods 4
Here are all the specifics of Apple's newest phones, smartwatches, and earbuds in case you missed the event live
New iPhones are arriving on schedule as September approaches. At a press conference in Cupertino yesterday, Apple presented its newest iPhone models. The iPhone 16 phones are essentially copies of the versions from the previous year, as was to be expected. Apple also unveiled the new Apple Watch Series 10, two new pairs of AirPods, and comprehensive hearing aid features coming to the second-generation AirPods Pro, all while smartphones—both normal and Pro—took centre stage.
The company also provided specifics on the newest mobile chipsets it has developed, which are powering the latest iPhone models. It also reminded people of what to anticipate when Apple Intelligence-powered iOS 18 debuts later this month. The full list of announcements made at Apple's iPhone 16 event is available on Engadget in case you missed the live stream.
Apple iPhone 16 and 16 Plus
At the event, Apple announced the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which come in new colours like ultramarine, teal, and pink and have a design that is resistant to dust and water. The screen size of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus is 6.1 and 6.7 inches, respectively. Both of those have a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits and a minimum brightness of 1 nit when in complete darkness. This year's iPhones also feature the Action button, which is identically customisable to the one that was present on the Pro models from the previous year.
Additionally, a new "button"-like easy-access camera control lets you swiftly operate the camera with a simple finger slide. Visual Intelligence, an AI-powered feature that will be available in iOS 18 and can tell you more about whatever you aim your camera at, may also be accessed via this tool. When you point your camera at a flyer you see on the street, it can do things like add live event dates to your calendar. It looks similar to Google Lens. The regular iPhone 16 models come with a 48-megapixel Fusion primary camera, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, and a brand-new focussing ultrawide camera. Additionally, this array is capable of taking Spatial Photos, which can be seen on Apple's Vision Pro.
The new A18 chip, which features a 16-core neural engine tailored for generative models, powers both of the standard iPhone 16 models. The inside components include a 5-core GPU and a 6-core CPU, both of which are essential for supporting the several new Apple Intelligence capabilities that iOS 18 will bring.
Apple claims that the A18 chipset's increased efficiency along with iOS 18's improvements, along with the bigger batteries found in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, should result in significantly longer battery lives overall (though the company did not disclose an exact figure). The pre-order prices for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus start at $799 and $899, respectively, and they will go on sale on September 20.
The 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max iPhones
This year's iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, which sport 6.9-inch and 6.3-inch ProMotion, always-on screens, respectively, are part of the Pro range of iPhones. Apple claims that Grade 5 Titanium, which is used in the construction of both, is even lighter than stainless steel. Four additional colours will be offered for these handsets: desert, which is similar to a dusty gold, white, black, and natural.
The business claims that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are optimised for Apple Intelligence and can fully utilise all of the new features included in iOS 18. Operating these phones is the new A18 Pro chipset, which is even faster and more efficient than the ordinary A18 chip featured in the original iPhone 16 series. It makes use of 3nm transistors.
Both models have a 48MP Fusion camera, a 48MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto lens on their rear camera arrays. The upgrades to the primary camera enable slow-motion and 4K video capture at 120 frames per second. Additionally, the new camera control button on both phones makes it simpler to access the camera and all of its editing and capturing capabilities. Both smartphones have four inbuilt studio-quality microphones for better audio capture and the ability to record spatial sounds.
Qi2 wireless charging is supported by both the iPhone 16 Pro series and the regular iPhone 16 phones. Apple will provide updated MagSafe charging cases that take into consideration the addition of a camera control button. On Friday, September 13, pre-orders for the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will open for $999 and $1,199, respectively. On September 20, they will be extensively accessible.
As speculated, the AirPods 4 were unveiled today at the iPhone 16 announcement. These feature a new bud shape meant to fit a wider variety of ear shapes and provide greater comfort all around. Because of the H2 chip inside of them, features like Personalised Spatial Audio are possible as well as better audio quality. The charging case is the smallest AirPods charging case to yet and features a USB-C connection.
There will be a second version of the AirPods 4 that supports transparency mode and active noise suppression in addition to the standard model. When Conversation Awareness detects that you are conversing with someone, it will also automatically reduce the volume of your media. The price of the AirPods 4 with ANC was $179, while the regular model cost $129; both are available for pre-order today and will be widely available on September 20.
New colours for AirPods Max
Apple's redesigned AirPods Max don't represent a radical design change. Rather, they will accept USB-C charging and come in a few new colors—midnight, blue, purple, orange, and starlight. The new colours will go on general release on September 20 and are already available for $549 on pre-order.
The latest hearing aid features of AirPods Pro
Apple said that the second generation AirPods Pro will have new capabilities aimed at raising awareness of and preventing hearing loss. Users can check if they already have some hearing loss by taking a clinically validated hearing test, and a function called "Hearing Protection" will be enabled by default. Furthermore, the AirPods Pro will be equipped with a clinical-grade hearing aid feature that will function in tandem with a hearing profile that is generated following the completion of the hearing test.
Series 10 Apple Watch
Today, Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 10, which is the logical progression of the Series 9 from last year. Its wide-angle OLED display is somewhat bigger than that of the Apple Watch Ultra, and it boasts the thinnest and largest display of any Apple Watch ever. Along with the larger screen, the case's rounded corners and wider aspect ratio should provide users more room to interact with the Watch's images and text. According to Apple, the screen appears 40% brighter from an angled perspective and continues to display a second hand even when your wrist is down.
The new S10 SiP chip, which Apple says is designed for performance, power efficiency, and intelligence (i.e., Apple Intelligence), powers the Apple Watch Series 10. The new Photos watch face on the Series 10 is one instance of Apple Intelligence in action; it automatically selects and presents the best images from your library.
Regarding fitness capabilities, Apple revealed that the most recent watchOS update will enable the Series 10 to identify symptoms of sleep apnea—as long as you wear it to bed on a regular basis. Apple states that it is awaiting FDA approval and anticipates launching the sleep apnoea detection technology in over 150 nations. In other activity-related areas, the Series 10 will support the new Tides app in watchOS 11 and offer scuba tracking capabilities.
Playing music straight from the Watch's speaker is another new function. This could come in useful if you don't have AirPods or another pair of Bluetooth earbuds with you. There will be two new polished titanium and jet-black aluminium finishes for the Apple Watch Series 10. On September 20, it will be freely accessible after going on pre-order today.
