Emmy Awards 2024: Shogun Dominates, Hacks Surprises in Comedy
From Shogun's historic sweep to Hacks' unexpected comedy win, the 76th Emmys were full of triumphs, snubs, and surprises

The 76th Emmy Awards had it all: expected successes, unexpected wins, and shocking snubs. The annual awards night, co-hosted by Dan and Eugene Levy and held at the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, brought together the best of the small screen to be recognised for their outstanding performances.

FX's Shōgun, a historical drama set in feudal Japan, won a record-breaking 18 Emmys, the most for a TV series in a single season. The series previously earned 14 Creative Arts Emmy accolades and four Emmys in 2024, including Outstanding Drama and top individual performance accolades for its two leads.

Shōgun is the second non-English language show to be nominated for Outstanding Drama at the Emmy Awards, following Squid Game in 2022. This is a significant step forward for foreign-language entertainment.

Significantly, historical dramas have increased the prominence and recognition of Japanese actors. Hiroyuki Sanada, a veteran of 60 years, earned his first Emmy. Newcomer Anna Sawai also won her first Emmy. Both actors are the first Japanese performers to receive awards in their respective categories.

There were some minor disappointments, however, as Tadanobu Asano was unexpectedly overlooked for the Outstanding Supporting Actor award for his depiction of the cunning Yabushige, while Comso Jarvis' John Blackthorne did not receive a nod.

Netflix's Baby Reindeer was another series that created a lot of interest when it launched this year. Richard Gadd created, wrote, and starred in the dark comedy series, which delves into the actor and comedian's real-life tragedy of sexual abuse and being stalked by a woman for more than four years. The show won four Emmys: Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Lead Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actress, and Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series.

Perhaps the biggest and most surprise win of the night was Hacks' triumph for outstanding comedy over FX's reigning winner, The Bear! In July, the culinary series set the record for the most nominations for any comedy series in Emmy history, making it the heavy favourite to win. However, Hacks, a comedy-drama about a great comedian and a novice writer, had the final laugh.
That is not to suggest The Bear returned home empty-handed. Star Jeremy Allen White won his second straight Emmy for outstanding comedy actor, while Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas won for best supporting actor and actress, respectively.
