Travel Smarter From Dubai: Flight, Airport & Hotel Tips Worth Knowing
From using your Emirates miles more strategically to getting through DXB faster, a little planning can make your next trip noticeably better

A smoother holiday often starts long before you arrive at your destination. The flight you choose, the airport you depart from and even the benefits attached to your credit card can affect both the price and the experience.
If you're travelling from the UAE, here are a few things worth checking before your next trip.
Before You Book
Compare more than one UAE airport
Dubai residents don't necessarily have to begin every journey at DXB.
Depending on the destination, flights from Sharjah International Airport or Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi may offer a better fare or schedule. Before confirming a booking, compare all realistic departure points — particularly when travelling as a family or group, where even a small difference per ticket can add up.
Just remember to factor in the cost and time required to reach the alternative airport.
Play around with your dates
Being flexible can sometimes matter more than finding a promotional code.
Recent Expedia flight data suggests that both the day you book and the day you travel can influence average fares. Sunday has been highlighted as a potentially better booking day than Friday, while Thursday departures have historically offered lower average prices than some other days.
Treat these patterns as a starting point rather than a guarantee: prices still depend heavily on the destination, season and demand.
Don't ignore departure time
The cheapest flight isn't necessarily the smartest flight.
Expedia's air travel research has also found differences in cancellation rates depending on departure time. If several flights are similarly priced, checking their historical reliability and choosing a more favourable departure window could save considerably more than choosing purely by fare.

If You Fly Emirates
Make your Skywards Miles work for you
A complimentary upgrade at check-in sounds appealing, but relying on luck isn't much of a strategy.
A better approach for regular Emirates passengers is to join Emirates Skywards and collect miles consistently. Those miles can later be used towards cabin upgrades when eligible seats are available.
Travellers can also activate automatic upgrades using Skywards Miles on eligible bookings. If upgrade availability opens, the request can then be processed without constantly checking manually.
Availability isn't guaranteed, so joining the programme doesn't mean every economy ticket will eventually become business class. But if you already fly Emirates regularly, ignoring the miles you're earning makes little sense.

Make DXB Work For You
Check what your bank card already includes
Before paying for lounge access, check your credit card.
Depending on the card and issuing bank, your benefits may include complimentary or discounted airport lounge visits, restaurant offers and other travel privileges.
These benefits are easy to overlook, particularly if your card was originally chosen for cashback or everyday spending rather than travel.
Use Smart Gates if you're eligible
One of the easiest ways to reduce time at passport control at Dubai International Airport is to use the Smart Gates.
Eligible UAE and GCC nationals, UAE residents and certain visa-on-arrival travellers with biometric passports can use the automated system rather than going through a conventional immigration desk.
Check your eligibility and registration status with GDRFA before travelling rather than trying to figure it out while standing at the airport.
Travelling with children? Look for the free extras
Families travelling through Dubai can access several services that make the airport experience easier.
Depending on the terminal, airline and current programme, these can include family facilities and complimentary services such as airport strollers. Emirates also periodically provides additional experiences and amenities for younger passengers.
It's worth checking what's currently available before departure — especially when travelling with small children.
At The Hotel
Join the loyalty programme before you book
Hotel loyalty schemes aren't only useful for people spending half their lives in five-star properties.
Even occasional travellers can find member-only rates, promotions, points and other benefits after signing up. Hotel apps may also surface offers that aren't immediately visible through a standard search.
Before booking through a third-party platform, compare the price with the hotel's direct member rate.

Ask strategically rather than expecting an upgrade
Free hotel upgrades are never guaranteed, but how and when you ask can make a difference.
Instead of simply requesting "an upgrade", try asking whether a higher-floor, corner or larger room is available. Depending on the property, this may result in a better room even when moving to an entirely different category isn't possible.
Special occasions are also worth mentioning when they're genuine. Hotels sometimes add small extras or offer a better available room for birthdays, anniversaries and honeymoons.
The Travel Checklist Before You Leave
A few minutes of preparation can improve a trip without dramatically increasing its cost.
Compare DXB with Sharjah and Abu Dhabi airports. Check different travel dates and departure times. Review your credit card benefits. Make sure you're collecting airline and hotel loyalty points. And check whether you can use DXB Smart Gates before arriving at immigration.
As for the elusive free upgrade? There is no secret phrase that guarantees one.
But loyalty status, miles, availability and a well-timed request give you considerably better odds than simply smiling hopefully at the check-in desk.
