Barbie World Takes Over London!

"Barbie: The Exhibition" offers a fascinating exploration of design, culture, and the enduring appeal of an iconic doll. It's a must-visit for Barbie fans and design enthusiasts alike.

London's Design Museum is hosting a captivating exhibition that delves into the world of Barbie, exploring the iconic doll's evolution over six decades.

This immersive experience, titled "Barbie: The Exhibition," is a collaboration between the Design Museum and Mattel, marking the 65th anniversary of the beloved brand. Featuring over 250 objects, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through time, showcasing the transformation of Barbie dolls, cars, outfits, and dreamhouses.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a focus on design. Curator Danielle Thom emphasizes the intricate design process behind each Barbie creation, revealing how the dolls and their accessories reflect the social and cultural context of their time. The exhibition's design, crafted by Sam Jacob Studio, immerses visitors in a vibrant "candy color palette," creating a visually stunning backdrop that perfectly complements the Barbie universe.

From the rare first edition Barbie of 1959 to the best-selling Totally Hair Barbie of 1992, the exhibition showcases a diverse range of dolls. A particular highlight is the exploration of Barbie's hairstyles, reflecting the changing trends and embracing inclusivity with a variety of hair textures.

The exhibition also pays tribute to Barbie's journey towards inclusivity, featuring dolls like Christie, the first Black Barbie, and highlighting recent strides in representing diverse body types and disabilities. While acknowledging Barbie's mass-produced nature, Thom recognizes the brand's progressive elements in reflecting cultural shifts.

Beyond dolls, the exhibition explores architectural and fashion influences throughout the decades. From the early Dreamhouses inspired by Florence Knoll to the more contemporary designs, visitors can witness the evolution of Barbie's living spaces. Additionally, iconic outfits worn by Margot Robbie in the blockbuster movie "Barbie" are on display, capturing the film's vibrant and nostalgic aesthetic.

Select pieces from last year's Barbie film were also included

The enduring popularity of Barbie is attributed to her ability to reflect cultural trends and resonate with audiences of all ages. As curator Danielle Thom aptly puts it, "Barbie's meaning is in the eye of the beholder."
