The National Anthem of Saudi Arabia is to be reinvented by Hans Zimmer

The renowned composer of Dune and The Lion King sets off on a groundbreaking musical journey

Why Is the Saudi Arabian Anthem Being Updated?

As part of a larger effort to modernise the nation's image and diversify its economy, Saudi Arabia has hired Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer to rework its national song. This program is in line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 plan, which seeks to transform the country's standing internationally. Critics have noted, meanwhile, that these initiatives align with persistent worries about the nation's human rights situation.

Hans Zimmer: Who Is He?

German-born composer Hans Zimmer is recognised as one of Hollywood's most inventive composers. Under the guidance of mentor Stanley Myers, Zimmer began his career in London. He rose to recognition with his Rain Man (1988) score, which was nominated for an Oscar. His classic compositions, which combine classical orchestration with state-of-the-art musical technology, include The Dark Knight trilogy, Dune, and The Lion King (1994).

An Overview of the Saudi Anthem's History

Abdul Rahman Al-Khateeb, an Egyptian composer, wrote the first Saudi song, Aash Al-Malik (Long Live the King), for King Abdulaziz in 1947. King Fahd commissioned the current lyrics to be written by poet Ibrahim Al Khafaji in 1984. The anthem, which has its roots in Arab fanfare, continues to be a symbol of the musical traditions of the area.

Image Makeover or Modernisation?

This anthem revision symbolises Saudi Arabia's aspiration for a globalised identity as it experiences swift transformations, from permitting women to drive to creating futuristic mega-projects like NEOM. Activists counter that such actions are meant to obscure hardline policies that still exist, such as limitations on women's rights and free expression.

The Kingdom's attempt to combine tradition and innovation, establishing itself as a cultural pioneer on the international scene, is highlighted by Hans Zimmer's participation.
