Notre Dame Shines Again: A Star-Studded Celebration Marks Its Triumphant Return
The iconic cathedral rises from the ashes in a dazzling ceremony featuring global leaders, heartfelt tributes, and a billion-dollar restoration
Paris’s beloved Notre Dame Cathedral has reclaimed its place in history, opening its doors after five years of painstaking restoration following a devastating fire in 2019. The blaze nearly toppled the 860-year-old masterpiece, but now it stands taller, brighter, and more magnificent than ever.
A Night to Remember
Over 2,500 prominent visitors attended the reopening event, which was sponsored by French President Emmanuel Macron and left a lasting impression. The lineup featured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prince William of Britain, and US President-elect Donald Trump.
The resuscitation of the Gothic landmark was marked by the Archbishop of Paris, Laurent Ulrich, hitting the doors three times with his crozier as part of a symbolic rite. The cathedral's shining spire and recently refurbished organ stood as symbols of human tenacity as a psalm reverberated through its sacred halls.
A Global Effort Restores a Global Icon
Nearly $1 billion in donations enabled the restoration, which revitalized Notre Dame. Its famous gargoyles, tall rib vaults, and elaborate flying buttresses were restored by artisans from all around the world. The church, which was once blackened by smoke, is now glowing with white stone and gold accents, leaving visitors in wonder.
Macron addressed the crowd with words that echoed the weight of the occasion: “The shock of reopening will be as powerful as the fire itself—a shock of hope.”
Tributes to Heroes
The firefighters who heroically fought the fire in 2019 were given a standing ovation, which was a touching moment. Outside, the word Merci (“thank you” in French) was projected onto the cathedral’s façade—a poignant tribute to the heroes and restorers who made this day possible.
The French president also recounted the moment the fire was declared under control. “At 10:47 PM, the message came: Notre Dame was saved. Disfigured, but saved.”
A Historic Gathering of Leaders
World leaders gathered to witness the rebirth of Notre Dame in a rare show of solidarity. Those in attendance were former French presidents François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Elon Musk.
Trump praised Macron for the invitation and called it a "great honor." Trump is seated next to Macron. Earlier in the evening, he also shook hands with Prince William and met Ukrainian President Zelenskyy.
Ringing the Bells of Hope
The bells of the church rang out once again as the event came to a head, their chimes resonating throughout Paris. A sound that hadn't been heard in years filled the room as the organ within sprang to life.
President Macron captured the evening’s sentiment perfectly: “Tonight, the bells of Notre Dame ring again, and with them, a message of hope and resilience for the world.”
