Hatta Unveils the World’s Largest Mosaic Artwork for UAE National Day

A breathtaking tribute to the UAE's founding fathers, this 2,198.7-square-meter mosaic masterpiece now adorns the Hatta Dam, setting a global record

Just in time for the UAE National Day festivities, Hatta has seen the creation of a record-breaking public art piece. The enormous 2,198.7-square-meter mosaic honors the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding fathers of the United Arab Emirates, and is officially acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the largest mosaic artwork in the world.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Hajar Mountains and the Hatta Dam Water Falls, the mural recreates a historical photograph of the two leaders smiling together. More than 1.2 million pieces of marble had been painstakingly set aside to form this fantastic work of tribute in support of this emirate's pursuit toward the preservation and showcasing of national cultural heritage.

A Tribute to Visionary Leadership

The elaborate design of the painting evokes historical authenticity and emotional depth by reflecting Sheikh Rashid's and Sheikh Zayed's traditional clothing. The relevance of the artwork was emphasized by Mona Al Marri, Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office:

“This mural stands as a powerful tribute to the UAE’s cultural identity and the visionary leadership of Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid. It symbolizes the enduring values that have shaped our nation and serves as an inspiration for future generations,” she said.

The mural is a centerpiece of the Dubai Street Museum initiative, launched in 2016, which celebrates the emirate’s rich history and aspirations. The collaborative project was spearheaded by Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the Dubai Media Office, in partnership with DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority).

A Record-Breaking Feat

Crafting the mosaic was no small feat. Over four months, the team worked tirelessly to assemble the marble pieces, using innovative techniques to ensure durability and vibrant colors. This stunning achievement adds yet another global record to Dubai’s growing list of accolades.

The mural also replaces an earlier artwork at the Hatta Dam that similarly honored the UAE’s founding leaders. Its unveiling coincides with celebrations marking the 53rd anniversary of the UAE’s formation, further reinforcing the nation’s pride in its history and accomplishments.

A Legacy of Public Art in Dubai

Guided by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai continues to develop initiatives that transform the city into an open-air museum. The Hatta mosaic is the latest example of how public art can blend heritage with creativity, making history accessible to all.

Whether viewed from afar or up close, the mural at Hatta Dam is more than just an artwork; it’s a testament to the UAE’s spirit, resilience, and enduring pride in its roots.
