Your career spans over two decades with roles at some of the world’s leading tech companies. What inspired you to pursue a path in technology and procurement, and how did your early experiences shape your leadership style?
Don: Technology is the master of the world business that thrives everyone and is vital knowledge to lead any other business. It was the right dream to be true. Since day one, I have seen myself having a passion for leadership, but I also understood it has to come with lots of learning, hard work, and experiences. Starting my career at IBM was a blessing as it was the main sales and leadership master school for the world, which helped a lot in understanding the complexity of the business and how to be completely focused, organized, and disciplined. Also, working directly with big, large organizations as customers and partners strengthened this starting point of my experience.
Throughout your journey, you've held leadership positions across various regions. What cultural insights have you gained from working in such diverse markets, and how have these experiences influenced your approach to business and management?
Don: I have managed over 84 countries across the globe, from the Middle East, Africa, Russia CIS, and the US to Asia Pacific, plus some European countries too. This has created a clear multicultural mindset of how to deal with different cultures, languages, the nature of people, and full diversity based on each and every region. It created a very open mindset with a global entrepreneur direction. It helped me shape my strategic thinking and thought leadership style of managing the business on a large scale.
Balancing work and personal life is a challenge for many executives. How do you manage to stay grounded and find balance amid your demanding roles and responsibilities?
Don: That's the million-dollar question for all executives, and I can be honest - it's very hard. Once you smell success as a leader, you start prioritizing business a lot more than anything. However, with years of experience and understanding how to organize your work, meetings, travel, and many more, I started making sure I always have my calendar set to allow time for me to reflect on everything, spend time with family, and ensure my wellness is achieved, as it is the core of being successful. My body and mind should be healthy for any executive to continue growing and shining.
You’ve led teams through significant technological transformations. Can you share a moment in your career that you found particularly challenging or rewarding, and what lessons you learned from it?
Don: Lots of moments to share, but I will share the most recent one. We had one year that was really tough and challenging in achieving our company goals and KPIs due to COVID times. Everything changed, everything was modified in a bad way - it was a very challenging year. But what I did was stick to my leadership skills and apply the right strategies to keep the team connected and motivated, with some changes in how the game was played. This paid off the year after with complete success and exceeding targets, which was super rewarding for the company, the team, the team spirit, and myself for sure. Lessons learned are clear to me - the team is the main asset of every organization! Applying high leadership skills can keep the company strong and alive! Never give up in a bad moment but stay strong, believe in your mindset, work on it, and you will achieve it!
Mentorship often plays a crucial role in shaping careers. Were there any mentors who had a significant impact on your journey, and how do you now approach mentoring the next generation of leaders?
Don: I was absolutely lucky to have my first mentor at IBM, who discovered my talent in leadership, public speaking, and negotiation skills from the beginning. He played a vital role in who I am at the moment. I always salute him and appreciate him all the way! I had many other mentors across Microsoft and Cisco mainly, and again, I was blessed to have top high-level mentors with 30 to 40 years of experience. It shaped who I am, and I love it! I learned from it how to mentor myself, which is the core thing I do along the way with my team or even other teams globally. My main goal is building successors and a new generation of leaders, and thank God I'm very successful in doing that! And I always will.

Given your extensive experience in emerging technologies, what personal passions or interests do you have outside of work that keep you inspired and innovative?
Don: I'm a very hyperactive person who thrives on energy, and that reflects on everything I do. My main personal passions are all related to the same - boxing, car racing, and travel. These are my main interests. I am always innovative, inspired, and persistent.
What personal values or philosophies guide your decision-making process in both your professional and personal life?
Don: My personal values are very clear, the same as my character - discipline, effort, learning, persistence, consistency, being very focused, and being ethical all the time. For sure, being fair to the people around me, either personally or professionally, is key. Making decisions is core in my life, and if you ask me, my main job is making decisions fast and clearly that can change business directions in a very strong way. I always apply my values while taking these decisions.
Can you tell us about a pivotal moment when you had to make a tough decision, and how that decision impacted your career trajectory?
Don: I took a very tough decision to move out of Microsoft the second time and move to Chinese Huawei, which was really against all of my knowledge and a culture shift in my career. I led this company for two years, and it definitely made a big change in my career - learning a completely new way of doing business and managing an Asian-type company with a very different way of doing things. This was followed by moving to real estate, where I was the President of DAMAC International, opening the Russian market as well as the Chinese market. Again, this was another big shift, teaching me to be more open to new markets and new lines of business. I believe it was a great experience that also added to my career as a global entrepreneur.
Looking back at your career, what achievements are you most proud of, and what personal goals do you still aspire to achieve?
Don: Lots of moments - being in the Chairman's Club with Microsoft three times and receiving my award from Bill Gates directly was something I am definitely proud of. The same goes for Cisco, where I was sitting as part of the advisory board of acquisitions at a very young age. Also, being in JAGGAER’s President's Club for five years in a row is a huge proud moment. But that's not the end. My personal goals can't be shared here, but I aspire for higher roles and leadership positions in much wider, bigger organizations. I dream to run the whole world and apply all my experiences in helping people grow. Also, growing my private company to be a leader in my field is a big personal goal.
You are known for your participation in "East Talks Business" and other community platforms. What drives you to engage with the business community, and what message do you hope to convey to aspiring professionals?
Don: When I founded East Talks Business, my main goal was to apply my experience and vast C-level network to help shape businesses across the eastern world - Middle East, East Africa, East Asia, Eastern Europe, and the East Coast. My message to aspiring professionals: The more hands you shake, the more money you make. Never stop learning and working hard. Be humble but persistent.
