Dubai Just Made It Easy to Spot AI-Generated Content. Here’s How
Dubai unveils Human-Machine Collaboration Icons so readers can instantly tell whether content is human-made, AI-generated, or a mix of both

Can you tell if AI wrote this? Dubai wants to make sure you can.
If you've ever found yourself wondering whether a piece of content was written by a human or a super-smart algorithm, you’re not alone. As AI-generated text, images, and videos continue to flood the internet, it’s getting harder to know who, or what, is behind what we see and read.
Dubai has just rolled out a solution that could bring much-needed clarity.
Introducing the Human-Machine Collaboration Icons
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, has announced a new global classification system to identify the origin of digital content. Developed by the Dubai Future Foundation, the Human-Machine Collaboration Icons clearly show whether content was created by a person, a machine, or a collaboration between the two.
Dubai government agencies are already being directed to adopt these icons in their research and publications. And content creators, researchers, and institutions around the world are being invited to follow suit.
How the Icon System Works
The Human-Machine Collaboration Icons are designed to make content origins easy to understand at a glance. There are five main icons, each using arrow directions to show who led the creation process:
- Upward Arrow: Fully human-made content with no AI involvement.
- Upward Diagonal Arrow: Human-led content with AI support for tasks like editing or accuracy checks.
- Horizontal Arrow: Equal collaboration between human and machine, with no dominant contributor.
- Downward Diagonal Arrow: AI-led content reviewed or refined by a human.
- Downward Arrow: Fully AI-generated content with minimal human input.
In addition to these, there are nine functional icons that show where AI was used in the process. These include:
- Ideation
- Literature Review
- Data Collection
- Data Analysis
- Data Interpretation
- Writing
- Translation
- Visuals
- Design
These labels can be combined to give a clear picture of how content was created. While the system doesn’t assign percentages to each contribution, it offers an easy, flexible way to increase transparency. Whether AI helped brainstorm, write, analyze, or translate, readers will now know how much of the content was machine-influenced.
Why This Move Matters Now
With AI becoming more advanced every day, Sheikh Hamdan pointed out the growing challenge of distinguishing between human creativity and machine output. As he stated:
“This calls for a new approach to recognise the growing role of intelligent machines.”
The classification system is a response to that challenge. It offers a transparent way for creators to show how content is made. It doesn't assign exact percentages or weights to the contributions, but it does allow readers and viewers to understand the process behind the product.
More Than Just Text
The icon system is not solely focused on articles or academic literature. It is designed to be used across contexts, industries, and content types. If you produce a report, infographic, or video, there are these icons you can insert into your output to communicate how AI was applied.
Available Now for Creators and Institutions
Anyone interested in using the Human-Machine Collaboration Icons can download them directly from the Dubai Future Foundation. The system is flexible and easy to integrate into existing workflows.
A Global Invitation for Transparent Content
This isn’t just a local initiative. Sheikh Hamdan has called on researchers, publishers, designers, and creators worldwide to adopt the classification system. The goal is to build trust, clarify authorship, and empower audiences to know more about the content they consume.
In a time when the line between human and machine is getting harder to see, this new system offers something we all need a little more of: clarity.
